September was a busy month for us.
We started it out by attending the reception of one of our returned missionaries, Brandon Johnson up in SLC.
We mostly walk in areas very close to where we live, and this is why we love our area. The dikes surrounding Provo Airport host some interesting water birds near the canals or on the lake when it is close enough.
Here are 3 Snowy Egrets and a Black-crowned Night Heron all sitting together. Very unique.
The first weekend in September, Scott and I drove Braden and McKenna down to Las Vegas so we could attend the BYU vs Arizona football game hosted in the new Allegiant Arena there near downtown.
This shows the throngs of people making their way to the stadium way before the game began.
Here is what the arena looks like inside...completely covered with air conditioning, which was a huge bonus for the over 100 degree day!
Here we are outside of the arena on the bridge we walked over.
And here we met Zach Jensen and his fiance London outside of the venue.
We ran into Caleb Brown there as well.
We sat up in the second tier and our seats were really good. It was mostly a sea of blue in the stadium. This was good since BYU pulled off a big win at 24-16.
We had such a fun time that we are already talking about going back for another game next year!
Birding is almost a daily thing for us.
This photo was taken up at the northern shore of Utah Lake near the trail there.
We often see Sandhill Crane here and this shot was just so lovely with their necks looking crossed and the colors of the vegetation and flowers with their red eye patches.
The fall flowers have been so pretty this year. I never get tired of seeing the wild sunflowers.
We did something we have not done in a long while. We went camping with our YSA ward.
This location, THE OLD PINERY near Nephi, was a great find. It was private and very well cared for and had lots of activities the youth could participate in if they liked.
Here are Ray and Claudia Lambert and Troy Holden. They did most of the heavy labor of cooking and Scott and I did the S'mores after our fireside.
We have already scheduled the venue for next fall.
Scott and I discovered that the back of the Traverse is large enough to put some sleeping pads and just sleep inside there. We left our tents home!
Scott's lens can take really great photos. Here is the moon one night as we finished our walk.
And this beautiful light streaming through the trees near the Provo River Trail.
My preschool classes are settling in and doing very well.
This was our first field trip of the year to Spring Creek Park here in south Provo.
We had a really good time.
I FINALLY got a haircut about 6 months later than I should have. This is what Karin cut off...like 6-7 inches. It was crazy long!
And here we met up with Zach again after his temple sealing to London here at the Provo City Center Temple.
September 11 we went to the BYU UTAH game with Braden and McKenna. We love having season tickets with them and with Aaron.
It was a beautiful evening. Ty had been with us all afternoon and had tickets Braden gave him in the east stands.
Ty had predicted rain, and we went stocked with rain gear just in case.
We did get POURED on during the game. But, it was worth it.
BYU won 26-17 in a very exciting game!
You can see at the end, the fans poured onto the field to celebrate!
Here are Scott and I are after the game with the field almost completely covered by now.
And Braden and McKenna celebrating with us as well!
We enjoy looking at the planes at the airport when we walk. There were some really interesting Army type planes out parked by the new terminal being build. They had propellers that could be turned straight up to act like a helicopter and go vertical and then could switch to facing forward to propel forward. We saw one of them flying on a later walk.
Scott got to go up to Pocatello for the Temple Open House Media Day.
Beautiful place there and a quick up and back trip for him.
We went with our ward to a couple of Temple and Family History Activities.
First we went to do sealings with our ward and had a really great experience doing some of Scott's distant family names. We got to seal a set of 2 brothers to parents and then a set of 3 brothers to their parents...all at the same time.
This photo was up at the Lehi Family Discovery Center, at the Family Search facility there. We took 4 ward youth there for an evening activity and had a really great time.
I learned that I am 14% Native American thanks to my Great-great-great-great great grandmother Running Deer.
One night on our walk, I spotted a "Common Nighthawk" perched above the road we were walking on. We had seen a flock of Nighthawks a couple weeks before flying together at night, and so we started looking to see if there were any more.
By the time we left, we had found 7 total Nighthawks just in branches above the road. This is very uncommon to spot them in the first place as you can see how camouflaged they are.
And just for fun, here is a photo of a Nighthawk from the previous time we saw them.
From below, they have those big white stripes and look nothing like they do when perched.
This month we hosted an Arizona Phoenix Mission Fall BBQ in the backyard.
We were so pleased with how many friends showed up.
We counted like 40 adults and 18 children total.
They came from as far away as Minnesota and Idaho, but most live within an hour or so from us.
Here is one who came from Idaho, Aryssa Hutchinson McBride with David and baby Lily.
Some of them were interested in coming inside to see the mission quilt in our mission room.
And as always, there were old friendships rekindled. Catie and Melissa were companions on the mission...Catie trained Melissa.
Tonight Catie got to take on that role again to help comfort Melissa who left a brand new baby in the NICU in Orem to come see everyone. She needed a lot of support and came to just the right place for that to happen!
Our sandbox has proved to be a winner all around!
It hosted all the kids who came and kept them all entertained for hours!
My practice of hiding "jewels" in the sand has paid off bigtime! Kids will dig FOREVER looking for them.
I actually had field trips 3 weeks in a row this month.
The final one was to Jaker's Pumpkin Patch in Springville.
We had the most beautiful day and fun time together! All 18 kids were here this day which in itself is a miracle!
We discovered a small marsh area that has not been around here in years past. It is within a mile of our house just north of the parkway.
One morning I saw and then heard a group of Wood Ducks calling so we went back later and Scott took this photo of one pair.
They are just so stunning!
Even sparrows are pretty this time of year.
The White-crowned Sparrows come back in the fall and have the cutest white and black striped heads!
We have been fortunate to find Great-horned Owls on many of our walks this month.
This one is also very close to our house off of the SE dike. I don't ever get tired of seeing it.
